CLASS STRUCTURE, PLACEMENT & PROGRESSION
YOUTH DIVISION
Placement is individualized and based on a combination of prior training, current assessment, and ongoing faculty evaluation.
For returning students:
-
2025-26 season faculty assessments
-
consistency and class participation
-
technical proficiency and syllabus competency
-
artistic development
-
readiness for advancement
For new or transferring students:
-
trial classes or complimentary placement assessments
-
training history and prior experience
-
technical proficiency
-
artistic development
-
readiness for appropriate level placement
In levels where applicable, A and B (or Level 1 and 2) divisions support more refined placement within a single level:
-
B (Beginning / foundational stage)
-
A (Advancing stage within the same curriculum)
Placement may include enrollment in one or more class levels, and multiple classes per week support stronger technical development, retention, coordination, and artistry. Placement is reviewed throughout the year, and adjustments or advancement are made based on faculty evaluation and demonstrated readiness.
ADULT DIVISION
Adult classes are designed for dancers of all experience levels in an open-level class environment. Classes support different training focuses, including beginner, mixed-level, and intermediate/advanced options. Students may choose classes based on personal experience and comfort level.
No formal placement is required for Adult Division enrollment. Faculty may provide informal guidance to assist students in selecting appropriate classes.

The Adult Division operates independently from the placement-based youth training program.

POINTE TRAINING
INTRODUCTION TO POINTE WORK
BAll pointe classes require Ballet Arkansas faculty approval and concurrent enrollment in the corresponding ballet technique class.allet Arkansas emphasizes the gradual development of the technical strength required for pointe work. Formal pointe training begins during the academic year, allowing time for structured preparation under faculty supervision and approval.
PRE-POINTE CLASSES
Pre-pointe classes focus on building strength, articulation, and alignment in preparation for pointe work. Classes are taught in flat shoes, not pre-pointe shoes. Students who have trained in pre-pointe elsewhere should wear flat shoes.
ASSESSMENT AND MONITORING
Faculty closely monitor each dancer’s readiness for pointe work to ensure safe and effective progression. Evaluation prioritizes long-term development and readiness over advancement speed. Families are contacted when students are ready for progression into pointe training.
ADJUSTMENT OF PLACEMENT
Ballet Arkansas reserves the right to adjust or discontinue pointe participation if technical development, strength, alignment, or safety considerations indicate that changes are necessary. All decisions are made in support of long-term dancer health and safe progression.
